After averaging 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game in 28 games, he was named the league’s Rookie of the Year. He was dismissed from the active roster in May to prepare for the NBA draft in 2021.

Giddey declared for the 2021 NBA draft on April 27, 2021, and was expected to be a lottery pick. On July 29, he was selected as the Oklahoma City Thunder’s sixth overall choice, and on August 8, he signed a contract with the team.

He injured his ankle five minutes into his NBA Summer League debut the same day and was declared out for the rest of the competition as a precaution.
